Here is some more insight into your child's day in Room 9. Your child is welcome to come into the classroom and spend time with their friends from 8:30AM. There are always activities such as board games, card games, lego, reading and basketball available for them. Here is how various members of the class spent their time before the 9AM bell this morning:

Unfortunately the school pool was closed for your swimming session because it was full of leaves and branches from yesterday's strong winds. We went down to Putikitiki and played chain tag and master tag instead. The class is very good at respecting fairness and everyone had a good time. The pool will be open on Wednesday though!

Congratulations -- your child has made it through the first six days of the school year! Today was rainy day so we stay inside when it's too wet to play outside. There are still plenty of activities for the children to do inside though and everyone was very inclusive and happy. But let's hope the weather is better next week!

I would like to give you more insight into your child's learning spaces. We are lucky to have a deck area by the entrance to classroom so lots of students took the opportunity to continue their work on shading techniques on the deck while others had plenty of space inside the classroom.

It was another hot day today so we went down to Putikitiki for some fresh air. We are working on shading which is taught through the concept of a 'whispering', 'talking' and 'shouting' pencil. The children have two models that they are working from at the moment. Here is some lovely work in progress from Asher as photos of others in action!

You might be familiar with the concept of the mat in our classrooms at Hamilton East School. We spent time on the mat when we are doing things as a class. I have created as large mat area to give your children as much space as possible. Again, thank you to everyone for their vigilance with their masks inside.

We had a great couple of days getting back into the swing of school. Thank you again to all of the children in Room 9 for coping well with wearing masks in this heat. We have daily reflections before the final bell and a common comment from students was that they are excited to be back at school. That is great to hear and I look forward to the year ahead.
We have been learning outside to give everyone a break from their masks. The school is blessed with some lovely outdoor spaces and here is one of them in our Putikitiki ground (the bottom field of the school):

It was so great to see most students in class on Day 1! It was a hot day, but the classroom was well ventilated and we got outside often.
The children started learning an activity called Inchworm. In this activity, each small group picks up the hoop at the back and passes it to the front. The front team member places the hoop in front of the line and all team players step forward into the next hoop which allows the worm to move forward by one hoop. The learning focus is to develop group-work skills such as taking turns and working cooperatively. It was a lot of fun and we will use this concept of inchworms to accomplish more challenging tasks tomorrow!

Room 9 was lucky enough to participate in an hour of coding provided on an interactive livestream by OMG Tech. The platform was Minecraft Aquatic. There are some very capable coders in the class and it was lovely to see the children help each other.
