Term 2, Week 3

Kia ora whānau,

We have been exploring division in our maths lessons. Here students use cubes to group given numbers into as many equal groups as possible. 

We also had a short extreme weather event on Friday morning. It was quite a distraction so watched it for a few minutes.

Term 2, Week 2

Kia ora whānau,

We used the hall on Wednesday this week to have a team-building activity. Here students took turns guiding their blindfolded partner safely around the hall. After that the children formed two "trains" which were guided around an obstacle course by their classmates. Everyone enjoyed it and they could see it was a good way to develop trust in one another. We will repeat this another time.

Term 2, Week 1

Kia ora whānau,

Welcome back to school! Thank you to the class for settling back into the learning routines that we established in Term 1. It is great to be back to a near-full class of children every day. Here are some lovely photos of various members of the class engaged in peer reading. In this activity, each child reads their text to their buddy. It encourages a love of reading across all levels.

Week 10 in Room 9

Kia ora whānau,

We had another busy week in Room 9. On Friday our year 6 students had an external maths assessment so I took our year 5 students to the school hall where we presented poetry with Whaea Kat's class. It was great to the children to be able to use the stage in some cases.

We also share our creations in class whether it be our artwork or Lego constructions.

We also explored another science book during Week 10. This time we explored parts of the plant and we attempted to sprout a mung bean. The conditions might not have been conducive for this, but everyone was able to keep a diary of their observations.

Week 9 in Room 9

Kia ora whānau,

Here are some photos from Week 9. This week we our focus for Kori Tinana shifted to small ball skills. One drill for catching practice involves the class dividing into two teams. They then have to pass soft toys along a chain. The students enjoy using soft toys for catching as they seem less threatening if one is dropped.

We are continuing with our self portraits and artwork for our pepehas using the grid method. Here are two more:

We practise Toi Kupu (poetry) every day in Room 9. We are forming the habit of performing our weekly poem in front of each other on Fridays. Here are are some of our poets in action:

We are well into the swing of our Pāngarau (Maths) rotations. This includes me working with smaller groups while other groups play maths games or practise in their books or on the e-ako plattform:

When the weather cooperates, we eat our lunch communally on the top courts which are outside Rooms 8, 9 and 10. Of course, hats are compulsory during terms 1 and 4:

We have sixteen chromebooks, two iPads and two MacBooks in Room 9 so with reduced numbers this means that students have access to a device each.
