The Tarantula – Using Evidence

We have explored two science capabilities in Room 9 so far this year:

  1. Gathering and interpreting data

  2. Using evidence

We gathered data when we took temperatures in different parts the school. We then had some hunches about why the temperatures were varied in some parts of the school. Please click on the link for the presentation and activity.

September 7: Home Water Challenge

As you know, Hamilton East School is an Enviroschool. Here is an Enviroschool challenge that you can try at home. If you do this challenge, please share your results!

September 2: Floods

Above is the link to a Google Slide about floods. If you can’t access the file, please let me know. There is an option to do some research on a flood that has happened in New Zealand. You could find more about the flood in Auckland or any other one. For example, I wonder what is the largest flood to ever strike Hamilton? You can make a Google presentation for this research and move it to your Inquiry folder on your Hamilton East School account. You can also write your work on paper and stick it into your Pūtaiao book later.

August 27, Super Senses

I have shared this file with you on Google Slides. Again, you can do your work on paper and stick it into your Pūtaiao book later. You are also welcome to publish anything on your Hamilton East School account and move the file into your Inquiry folder. Please let me know if you have any questions about it.

Background

Supersense: We know that we have five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. “Super” means that something is especially good, so a “super sense” must mean that an animal or person has an especially powerful sense.

Questions

When are you aware of your senses?

Why do you think animals have senses?

What does “echolocation” mean? Think about “echo” and “location”.

Activity 1

Complete the table:

Activity 2

Investigate some of the ways animals in their own environment carry out other functions (for example, movement, eating): What functions do animals need to be able to perform to stay alive?  How do they perform these functions?

Extension Activity: Human senses

Watch the video and repeat the experiment about human reaction times for yourself.

August 25, The Tui – Using Evidence

I have shared this file with you on Google Slides. Please let me know if you have any questions about it.
